Brgy. Ritaglenda, Basilisa, PDI – Two former beneficiaries of Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) Program served to be an inspiration to their fellow beneficiaries as they turned to become an entrepreneur of a poultry business in the Municipality of Basilisa, Province of Dinagat Islands (PDI).

Mr. and Mrs. Saturnino D. Selim of Brgy. Ritaglenda, Basilisa, invested their TUPAD salaries to put-up a small poultry business. Initially, Saturnino also known as “Mano Satur”, who was a TUPAD beneficiary in 2019, purchased one hundred (100) heads of chicks from his 10-day work TUPAD salary. His wife, “Mana Cerela”, also invested all her salary of nine thousand six hundred pesos (Php 9,600.00) from her work on April 2 to May 08, 2020 to buy an additional one hundred (100) heads, poultry feeds and vitamins. Within forty-five (45) days, their business earned fourteen thousand pesos (Php 14,000.00). This enabled Mr. and Mrs. Selim to improve the water system of their household, which they also opened to the public that made clean water more accessible in their neighborhood.

On August 10, 2020, LGU Basilisa PESO Manager Mr. Rex A. Diaz invited DOLE PDI, TESDA PDI and representatives from the District Office of Congressman Allan B. Ecleo visited the couple. Mana Cerela expressed her wish to create an association in the barangay and create a livelihood project that can be assisted through DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program (DILP).

To date, the poultry business of Mr. and Mrs. Selim continues to flourish and already has six hundred (600) chickens. Further, a newly organized association inspired by the couple has been conferred with WA Registration with series number –CARAGA-PDI-2020-09-WA-022, with hopes to start a poultry business that can benefit the entire community of Brgy.
