In line with the government’s campaign on the promotion of safety and health in the workplace, medium and low-risk business establishments in Surigao del Norte participated in the Basic Occupational Safety and Health (BOSH) Training Course for Safety Officer 1 (SO1), held on August 11-12, 2022 at E.Y. Miners Suites, Borromeo St., this City.

In coordination with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Surigao del Norte Field Office (SDN FO), the BOSH training was facilitated by HSE International Health Safety and Environment Consultancy (HSEIC), a DOLE Accredited Safety Training Organization. Trainers included OSH practitioners, consultants, and training specialists, namely: Mr. Killy John Comingue, OSH consultants Ms. Edda Lydia Valdehuasa, and Mr. Victorino Porponio, and Training Specialists Ms. Sheila Naga and Ms. Jessa Mae Agcopra.

DOLE Senior Officer Brix Merlin presented and discussed the Salient Features of Republic Act 11058 or the “Act of Strengthening Compliance with Occupational Safety and Health.”

The twelve-hour training which includes 10 hours for BOSH and two-hour training of trainers’ course, allowed the participating establishments to comply with Labor Standards requirement of a trained Safety Officer in every workplace. A total of 53 participants from 15 establishments attended the training.

Mr. Roy Esperanza, branch manager of Rural Bank of Placer Incorporated in Placer, Surigao del Norte, who was one of the participants, expressed his thanks to DOLE-SDNFO for initiating the BOSH Training to ensure the safety of the workers and clients in their respective establishments.

“Dako jud among pasalamat ani nga SO1 Training under OSH, nga finally madugangan na ang among safety officer sa among office. Dako sad karajaw nga tabang ang nahimong inspection nan DOLE Surigao sa mga establishments para maka comply kami kung unsa jud ang gi require nan balaud (We are thankful to DOLE Surigao for spearheading this SO1 Training under OSH, that we will finally have an additional safety officer for our office. The DOLE inspection to establishments really helped us comply with what the law requires),” said Esperanza.

The compliance of every medium and low-risk business establishment to Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) program is a major aspect of the inspection program by DOLE to ensure the safety and health of workers. (CMJ, CLP-CF, DOLE-SDNFO)
