Some thirty-seven students from this municipality completed their employment period under the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES). The “poor but deserving” students were selected among the hundreds of applicants who undertook a selection process duly conducted by the Public Employment Services Office (PESO) of LGU-Cagdianao led by PESO Manager Ms. Salome M. Pegorro.

The employment for 20 days in various government offices in the municipality gave the students the opportunity to earn a daily wage equivalent to the salary of an entry level position in the concerned LGU.

“I have experienced a job that is beyond my capacity. It allowed me to learn a lot from entertaining clients to profiling individuals from different barangays. I am very thankful to the people who guided us all throughout the implementation of the program, especially from the LGU and DOLE,” said Ms. Meriam E. Baldemar, one of the student beneficiaries.

The SPES beneficiaries have also prepared presentations giving special thanks to the offices and officers that have given them guidance and assistance during their 20-day employment period. Ms. Pegorro, who has been with all the beneficiaries from the start said, “It was not easy to supervise 37 teenagers. It has caused me a lot of sleepless nights worrying about their work and well-being. However, hearing about the experiences and teachings all of the SPES babies have learned have made it all worth it.”

SPES is DOLE’s youth employment-bridging program which aims to provide temporary employment to poor but deserving students, out-of-school youth, and dependents of displaced or would-be displaced workers during summer and/or Christmas vacation or any time of the year to augment the family’s income to help ensure that beneficiaries are able to pursue their education.
