The Department of Labor and Employment gave birth to Career Guidance Advocacy to prepare the youth in responding to the varying employment trends. On February 7, 2019 at System Technology Institute-Surigao, a Career Guidance Orientation was attended by 60 graduating students which aims to empower their students in making an informed career decision.

A thorough discussion about the Career Guidance and Labor Market Information was provided by Mr. Dan Jave L. Dumpa, Labor and Employment Officer II of DOLE-Surigao del Norte Provincial Office. Also, Mr. Cornelius B. Mahinay, Labor and Employment Officer III discussed the General Labor Standards with concepts of the minimum requirements prescribed by existing laws, rules and regulations relating to wages, hours of work, allowances and other monetary and welfare benefits, including those set by occupational safety and health standards.

The Guidance Associate/Alumni Placement Officer of STI hopes to achieve her continuing process of training students to be competitive in their choice of work. She said “the STI has been committed to its branding ‘Enrolment to Employment’ and this is one of the initiatives to realize the goal. With the help of DOLE especially on employment opportunities, we can achieve what we aim for”.

Few of the impressions given by the students include Ethel P. Dekit, a 4th year BS-Information Technology student saying “What we expect from this seminar is that we hope to have the knowledge on how to face the world of work after graduation”.

Ian Joseph N. Dapo, a 4th year BS-HRM was interviewed after the orientation. In his statement, “I am thankful for this seminar because I was able to learn something before I practice my degree after I graduate”.

The activity becomes an annual event for STI Alumni Association and the month of February is the Career’s Month for the school. The activity holds a Job Preparation Seminar wherein DOLE is the major partner, followed by Jobs Fair inviting various establishments in the locality.
