The Department of Labor and Employment Province of Dinagat Islands Satellite Office (DOLE PDISO) witnessed the turnover of livelihood starter kits to parents of profiled child laborers from the Municipality of Dinagat, PDI. Each parent received Bottom Set Gill Net fishing gears consisting of gill net, floaters, and ropes from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Province of Dinagat Islands Provincial Office (BFAR PDIPO).
One hundred and forty-four (144) livelihood starter kits were distributed to 144 beneficiaries from the Municipality of Dinagat. Out of the 144 beneficiaries, 4 were parents of child laborers: one (1) from Brgy. Bagumbayan and three (3) from Brgy. New Mabuhay.
The children, who were tagged as child laborers, were profiled last February 14, 2022. Upon interview, the parents requested for Gill Net fishing gears to sustain fishing as their main source of income which was affected due to the devastation of Super Typhoon Odette. DOLE referred the family to its partner agency, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources for assistance.
It was very visible in the faces of the beneficiaries how grateful they were with the assistance received. One of the recipients, Mrs. Longos, wife of Mr. Mark Gil Longos from Brgy. Bagumbayan said “Dako jod kaau akong kalipay og pasalamat sa DOLE og BFAR kay nakadat mi ani nga mga materyales. Kini dako na kaau og tabang sa among pamilya ilabi na sa among mga anak.”
Present in the event were Dinagat Municipal Mayor Hon. Simplecio S. Leyran Jr., Municipal Vice Mayor Hon. Petnel Sombrado, Sangguniang Bayan member Hon. Ronald Letim, AQUA 1 of the BFAR PDIPO Mylene Reambonanza and her staff.
“This activity was made possible because of a good partnership between the Local Government Units and National Line Agencies. Rest assured that LGU Dinagat will support all the programs that will benefit the community of Dinagat. We hope that these fishing materials will augment your families’ livelihood and that you will take good care of the materials as it will not only help your family but also the people in your community.” Hon. Leyran Jr. shared.
One of the important interventions of the department in its Child Labor Elimination and Prevention Program (CLPEP) is providing the parents and/or guardians of profiled child laborers alternative means of income. DOLE partners with other government agencies in the provision of appropriate assistance to the beneficiaries.
