In preparation for Siargao’s 1st National Dragon Boat Regatta, 1,316 displaced, marginalized and disadvantaged workers were provided with emergency employment under the DOLE Tulong Pangkabuhayan para sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers Program (DOLE TUPAD). The workers assisted the LGU of Dapa, Siargao headed by Mayor Elizabeth T. Matugas in setting up the National Dragon Boat Regatta venue. The scope of work includes weeding the gardens of nearby schools and kiosks, repairing the riprap along the boulevard seawalls, placing the event decors, and sweeping the open grounds and streets during the 3-day event.
The National Dragon Boat Regatta was the first on the island after the pandemic lockdowns and the aftermath of Super Typhoon Odette. The event is participated in by amateur and professional dragon boat teams from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
The participating athletes, guests, technical teams, and spectators were fascinated by the degree of commitment and hospitality displayed by the Dapan-ons during the historic event.
The TUPAD Program has helped Dapa recover from the aftermath of the typhoon through employment assistance to its constituents. Now, the program has taken part in making history and achieving milestones in the municipality of Dapa for many years to come.
