Surigao del Sur – On February 11, 2019, DOLE-Surigao del Sur together with LGU-Marihatag released P249,250.00 worth of livelihood assistance to Canonoctan Women’s Organization (CWO) for its “Small Scale Egg Laying Production” at Purok Canonoctan, Barangay Antipolo, Marihatag, Surigao del Sur.
The grant was made possible thru the support of its stakeholders spearheaded by Mayor Raul Cubil of LGU-Marihatag; the Municipal Cooperative Office Head, Mr. Adelito Orbita; Vice Mayor Rebecca Polinar; PESO Manager, Jocelyn Ombon and the assistance of Ms. Genebelle Bal, DOLE-Surigao del Sur Provincial Head and Josel-An Dua, LEO II.
“I congratulate the members of Canonoctan Women’s Organization for receiving such livelihood grant. I challenge the members especially the officers to be firm and transparent in implementing the project because as per history of people’s organizations implementing livelihood projects, very few thrived for a couple of years but it eventually failed. Take care of this grant”, said Mayor Raul Cubil.
Mayor Cubil encouraged the group to become a model organization in Marihatag. The LGU is just as glad as the organization for the realization of the said project. Now the real challenge begins in the implementation and close monitoring of the livelihood project, for this will determine the success of the project implementation and the organization as well.
“This is the fruit of inclusive labor of the LGU, the organization and the Department of Labor and Employment. The challenge for the officers and the members of the organization is to be transparent, not just on the financial aspect but in the relationship of each member of the organization to avoid miscommunication and broken relationships”, Vice Mayor Rebecca Polinar said.
She also advised the group to religiously hold regular meetings for the reporting of expenses and earnings of the project.
“I am very happy that this livelihood project has materialized because I am not only after of my own benefit but for my members as well. This project will help them augment their income, instead of using their free time in other unproductive concerns. Our commitment is to implement the project efficiently to ensure that it will not fail and to double the number of pullets. We are very thankful to the Department of Labor and Employment for trusting our organization and granting our project proposal. We are also grateful for the support and help of the LGU to realize the project,” Asteria Orcullo, the president of Canonoctan Women’s Organization said.
“Out of 13 project proposals submitted by the LGU and approved for the budget under DILEEP 2018, 1 is already in operation,” said Ms. Genebelle Bal, DOLE-Surigao del Sur Provincial Head. The rest will follow at the soonest possible time on this quarter.
The turn-over of livelihood project “Small Scale Egg Laying Production” gave the members of Canonoctan Women’s Organization a new hope and responsibility in the implementation of the project. After the delivery of the ready-to-lay pullets on February 9, 2019, the harvesting of eggs started the following day. Due to the stress in transport, eggs’ sizes range from small to medium. They were able to harvest 1 egg tray (30 eggs) on the first day but is said to progress on the following week since the pullets are now recovering.
One of the owners of MacArthur’s Place, a beach resort in the province, expressed his interest in making a regular purchase of 20 egg trays per week and ensured that there will be an increase in purchase during summer.
This grant allows the members to have a sense of shared responsibility in the implementation of the project, consuming their time productively and contributing not only income augmentation but also the improvement of local economy in general.
