Surigao City, Surigao del Norte – Ms. Marietta P. Ravina, the HR manager of Hinatuan Mining Corporation in Taganaan, Surigao del Norte expressed her appreciation to DOLE for taking proactive measures over the reported closure/suspension of mining firms. DOLE’s invitation to a consultative meeting in Surigao City on February 10, 2017 touched the hearts of the top managers of her company and its workers.
The said meeting was one of DOLE Caraga’s responses on the pronouncement of DENR to close/suspend 23 mining firms, 14 of which are in Caraga. Ms. Ravina related that the company’s recognition is a sign of gratefulness for the concern given by DOLE in this time of crisis. Accordingly, the top management told the workers, “You do not have to worry. You see the government is not leaving us behind. DOLE is here and it is also preparing for what will happen to this institution and you the workers”. Calling all affected mining firms is a blessing to them and a manifestation that government really cares, DOLE cares!
Ms. Ravina actually posted “DOLE CARES” in her facebook account. The image of the meeting was also posted by the Hinatuan Miners facebook page which was followed by more than a thousand miners who posted several heart-warming comments. The same was also commended by Women in Mining Philippines page.
Atty. Evelyn R. Ramos, DOLE Caraga Regional Director pointed out the need to be prepared for whatever this reported closure/suspension may cause on the businesses and on the employment of workers. She added that DOLE wanted to know the present status of the mining operations and the exact number of would-be affected workers and their profiles for appropriate DOLE and other agencies’ intervention.
Prior to the meeting, technical staff were already deployed to the 14 mining companies to do assessment on the ground. The affected mining firms would submit transition/action plans and proposals to DOLE provincial offices. Atty. Ramos explained that the transition plan and other data would still be useful even if the closure/suspension is not pushed through since the mining sector is faced with the off- season dilemma where workers are forced to go on leave and do alternative agro endeavors but fall short of their incomes. DOLE’s menu of services incorporated in the action plans would serve the purpose of employing or assisting them during displacement or work stoppage.
