Butuan City – With the signing of the Republic Act No. 11058 or An Act Strengthening Compliance with Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Standards, Filipino workers take victory in this very important milestone. This law enables the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to raise compliance to OSH standards ensuring all-out safety and health at work for the Filipino workforce. Also, this intensifies productivity in the workplace making the businesses productive and sustainable. Thus, a win-win situation for both workers and employers.
In support to the said RA, DOLE Caraga participated in the recent OSH activities on August 1-2, 2018, a Visayas Mindanao-wide Tripartite Consultation and -Workshop on the Proposed Amendments of the OSH Standards was conducted in Cagayan de Oro City hosted by Department of Labor and Employment Regional Office X. It was participated by selected employers, labor sector and the government sector. The activity aimed to identify issues and gaps in the implementation of OSH, validate and discuss the proposed amendments on the OSHS rules, recommend measures and action plan in the implementation of the OSH. According to the message of the Keynote Speaker Undersecretary Joel B. Maglunsod read by the OSHC Director Noel C. Binag, “It is about time that the OSH Standards are harmonized with rules within the DOLE and with those of other regulatory agencies and make them adaptive to the times”.
On August 16-17, 2018, the Occupational Safety and Health Network (OSHNET) of Region X in coordination with DOLE Regional Office X hosted the 7th Mindanao Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) Summit with the theme “Occupational Safety and Health: Its Significance in Globalization” at the Grand Caprice in Cagayan de Oro City. There were at least 400 workers/ safety practitioners mostly from Mindanao who attended the said activity. The 2-day gathering created a resolution for the promotion of occupational safety and health in Mindanao.
Further, an OSH Law Forum hosted by the Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC) was conducted on September 7, 2018 at Albertos’ Bed and Dine in Butuan City. In addition, an OSH Practitioner Interview for applicants was conducted the same day. All the interested OSH practitioner applicants submitted the requirements and are now being validated by the Central OSHC Office.
Still in line with the OSH Law advocacy, an area-wide seminar on Labor Management Forum on the New OSH Law, DO 183, Child Labor and Special Laws for Women Workers and DOLE Latest LR Issuances and Voluntary Regularization was hosted by the National Conciliation and Mediation Board (NCMB). It was held in cooperation with the Caraga Industrial Peace Practitioners’ and Advocates, Inc. (CAIPPA) will be conducted at Hotel Oazis in Butuan City. A total of 266 representatives of workers and management from various companies in Caraga region attended the activity which aimed to promote and enhance industrial peace in the region.
