CAGDIANAO, PDI – In celebration of the 30th National Children’s Month Celebration, the Department of Labor and Employment Province of Dinagat Islands Satellite Office (DOLE PDISO) with the Public Employment Services Office (PESO) of the Municipality of Cagdianao and the Municipal Social Worker and Development Office (MSWD) Cagdianao, held a Child Labor Prevention and Elimination Program advocacy campaign to barangay officials and 30 chosen parents/guardians of profiled child laborers in the area. The advocacy effort was carried out in Balay Bakwitanan, Bantilis Building, Brgy. Poblacion, Cagdianao, Province of Dinagat Islands.

Cagdianao Municipal Social Worker Juliet Longos discussed topics on child labor underlining the obligation of the parents to their children. She also asked the participants about their perception of the rising child labor population in the municipality.

The parents shared that the lack of funds and other demands propelled their children to take the initiative and start working to support their families, despite their advice not to work.

DOLE PDISO’s Child Labor Prevention and Elimination Program Focal Person Arnaldo A. Anito and CLPEP Community Facilitator Ruvie R. Maldo then outlined the policies and initiatives of DOLE CLPEP. They also highlighted DOLE’s Kabuhayan para sa mga Magulang ng mga Batang Manggagawa (KASAMA) project. Under KASAMA, the department provides livelihood assistance to parents to improve their financial situation, ensuring that their kids will not feel the need to secure employment.

The 10 Rights of Children was also discussed by Cagdianao 4Ps Municipal Link Brian Macasucol, reminding the parents of their children’s privileges and the importance of prioritizing the physical, mental, and emotional health of their kids.

Valencia Barangay Captain Hon. Gesrael C. Tillo expressed his gratitude for the campaign, “Child labor cases are the reality that we, the barangay officials, should accept and face. Thank you for the initiatives from PESO and DOLE, as well as the other offices. We hope that we will be able to do another activity similar to this in the future but hopefully with the presence of both parents to ensure that they are fully aware of the program.”

The goal of the advocacy campaign for the Child Labor Prevention and Elimination Program is to enhance knowledge and sensibility among parents, barangay officials, and other program stakeholders. DOLE PDISO is actively pursuing new avenues to encourage the community to support the eradication of child-labor in the province. (RRM, CLPEP CF& JQG, LEO III-FNLI/DOLE PDISO)
