Surigao City, Surigao del Norte – February 10, 2017, Friday, a 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck Surigao City around 10:30pm which resulted to several collapsed buildings and had developed cracks including JEC Pension House located at P-4 Brgy. San Juan, Surigao City. Employees’ Compensation Commission (ECC) together with DOLE Surigao del Norte Representative, Mrs. Felibeth Bonono, visited the said establishment owned and operated by Mr. Justino Carbonilla.

Moreover, nine (9) establishments were advised by the City Government of Surigao to temporarily suspend their business operations due to physical or structural damage of the buildings which could be detrimental to its workers and clients. DOLE-Caraga and Surigao del Norte conducted an on-site visit to the concerned establishments and accounted 852 workers who could be affected by the said temporary closure/operation. They have convened the managers/administrative officers of the concerned establishments last February 12, as part of profiling and possible emergency work employment assistance. Additionally, from the City Mayor, they are already doing building assessments of the nine (9) establishments and are expected to give their recommendation within the week.e upcoming burial, including financial assistance to the family.

DOLE-Caraga Regional Director, Atty. Evelyn R. Ramos also attended a meeting called by the Presidential Management Service at the conference room of the City Hall, with other regional line agencies. They have reported to the body all the immediate actions undertaken by DOLE especially on the emergency employment or cash-for-work program to the concerned workers under the TUPAD program.

As reported by the provincial government, the damage to infrastructure in the entire Province of Surigao del Norte reached to P483M including public buildings, roads and bridges, school buildings, water system, airport and seaports. Rehabilitations on these priority projects are on its way. For DOLE-Caraga, we shall continue to do profiling of affected workers and provide livelihood assistance and other employment facilitation.
