Wife of Marawi Siege Slain Police Officer Sustains Livelihood Assistance from DOLE

Surigao del Norte-  Ms. Marilyn D. Solar who resides in Purok 6, Brgy. Mabua, Surigao City and the wife of slain Police Senior Inspector Freddie Solar at the height of Marawi feud has successfully sustained her livelihood project provided by the Department of Labor and Employment after two (2) years of financial grant.

On December 2017, DOLE-Surigao del Norte granted a starter kit amounting to Php 19,928.00 to Ms. Solar for a food store.  The store which is strategically located at Mabua Pebble Beach attracts customers and tourists who rent the cottages and visit the place for picnic and swimming. Taking advantage of the market, she established an adjacent small room where supplies of wine, soda and other drinks are made available since customers have been asking for products which her food store does not cater.  Since then, her daily sales went up by 100%.  In her testimony, she was used to having a daily sales of 1,000 but when she expanded her store, she was amazed of a daily sales which range from 2,000 to 3,500.00.

With the devastating event in life during the death of her husband, Ms. Solar was featured in some national television programs.  Neighbors and people around her felt her difficulty and helped her enhanced her business which started from selling RTWs and frozen food.

For almost 3 years of operation, the store has gained enough income, close to labelling it a success, making the state of living of Ms. Soler and her 2 children better than anyone could imagine.  As a single mother, Ms. Soler is very proud of being self-employed supporting her kids and her entire family and neighbors. The purchase of land with title last May 2019 was her breakthrough and a manifestation that she has successfully sustained and expanded her business. Presently, the store does not only offer food and non-food products but also supplies for fighting cocks. It has also obtained partnership of a water refilling station in Surigao City delivering gallons of water sold at a competitive and reasonable price.

Ms. Soler is truly an inspiration to all women workers who are assisted by DOLE in establishing income augmentation projects and who have the determination to make great things happen from small beginnings.
