Acting on the directives of the regional leadership to intensify the advocacy on labor standards and career coaching, the DOLE-Surigao Del Sur Field Office headed by Ms. Teofila T. Rosales conducted a back-to-back forum on general labor standards for employers , and career coaching for guidance counselors last Feb. 17, 2012 in two separate venues in Tandag City. Former DOLE UnderSecretary Hon. Arturo L. Sudosta attended the career forum and was the keynote speaker for the topic “Labor Market: Trends And Prospects (International) Perspective. The career forum, attended by guidance counselors and PESO managers, focused on the issue of job mismatch, and all the discussions revolved around effective career coaching as a means to resolve the mismatch issue. Topics in the career forum include: The Principles of Professionalism; Tips on Choosing A Career; Developing A Highly Marketable Skills; Orientation on The Philjobnet System Features; and the Labor Market Trends and Prospects by USec Sodusta. The final activity for the career forum was the joint agreement of the guidance counselors and PESO managers who were present, to form an association of career coaches for Surigao del Sur, and conduct an election of officers.
On the other hand, the labor forum venue was filled to its capacity with employers wanting to know more about general labor standards, Wage Order No. 11, and the new registration fee and capitalization requirement under Dept. Order No. 18., which Regional Director Ofelia B. Domingo herself discussed. Other topics discussed were Mandatory Benefits on Labor Standards; Laws on Termination; Promoting A Child-Labor Free Workplace; Update on the ETON Tragedy; Accreditation of Safety Practitioners, Gender Sensitivity and Development; Anti-Sexual Harassment Law; and the Incentivising Compliance Program.
The 2-in-1 symposium was able to advocate and reach out to 48 career coaches, and 52 management representatives spanning from the industries of mining, manufacturing, wholesale/retail, and service providers.
